Garbage disposal unit - How to choose

Let's see what to pay attention to when choosing, so that you will be satisfied with your new shredder.

There is currently a wide selection of kitchen waste disposals on the market. Most disposals look similar, but there are significant differences in the internal construction of the disposals. These differences, which are difficult to distinguish at first sight, have a major impact on the speed of grinding, ease of use, and the lifespan of the disposal.

Cuff

In the shredder throat, there is a noise-dampening cuff that also captures debris. Organic waste intended for shredding passes through the rubber cuff. Thanks to the cuff, water and small pieces of shredded waste do not splash out of the shredder. Therefore, dirt will logically accumulate on the underside of the cuff over time, which needs to be removed to prevent odor.

In EcoMaster waste shredders, the sleeve is removable, unfortunately, this is not the case with all brands.

A removable cuff has many advantages. You can easily clean it, and in case something falls into the shredder that doesn't belong there, it is not a problem to easily pull out the item.

If the cuff is worn out, you will appreciate that you won't have to disassemble the whole grinder. You can simply replace it.

Crushing chamber material

The crushing chamber must withstand quite a lot during crushing - impacts of crushed waste such as bone fragments or a metal object that mistakenly got into the shredder. At the same time, the chamber must be made of a material that dampens the vibrations and noise generated during crushing.

The best material for household waste disposers is a blend of polyester and glass-filled polyamide. This material is resistant to water, does not transmit vibrations, is tough and durable.

Another suitable material is stainless steel. Sometimes enameled sheet metal is also used. However, if the enamel cracks, corrosion can easily occur, resulting in the disqualification of the crusher from operation.

Induction motor or motor with permanent magnets?

The kitchen waste disposer with a permanent magnet reaches high speeds of 2600 to 2800 revolutions per minute. The motor of the disposer reaches these speeds practically instantly. You will appreciate the high grinding speed especially in home conditions. This type of motor is smaller and takes up significantly less space. Thanks to the quick start-up, the disposer does not get stuck before it "picks up speed," as can sometimes happen with induction motors.

Induction motors reach lower speeds between 1400 - 1725 revolutions per minute. These motors achieve full power thanks to a starting capacitor with a delay. On the other hand, a shredder with this motor can run continuously. Due to the absence of brushes, there is practically no wear and tear. Induction motors with additional power are ideal for use in gastronomy's shredders.

Grinding segments

The material of the crushing components must be sufficiently hard and corrosion-resistant at the same time.

For the production of crushing segments, stainless steel or nickel-plated steel is used. Blades are typically made of stainless steel sheet or cast from stainless steel. Industrial shredders use blades made of brass, on which carbide tips (tool steel) are brazed.

Warranty period

A kitchen waste disposer is not a device you buy every day. The length of the warranty period can be a pleasant assurance of the long lifespan of the disposer. Weltservis supplies the EcoMaster Plus disposer with a warranty of up to 6 years.

Interference filter

Some cheaper waste disposals are not equipped with a noise filter. When using such a waste disposal, unpleasant interference with the radio and television occurs.

Additional input

Some waste disposers are equipped with an additional inlet for connecting other appliances, such as a dishwasher or washing machine. This can be very practical - you don't have to interfere with the drainage pipe.

Certificates and standards

For legal sale on the Czech market, a grinder must comply with European standards and be marked with the CE label. Additionally, a kitchen waste grinder may meet the ISO standard (compliance with quality and quality management). ISO certification is a good sign - it is a reputable product.
