15 / 05 / 2023 Weltservis sinks Back to the blog

Do you want to upgrade your kitchen sink?

Whether you are finishing the renovation of your kitchen or have newly discovered a love for cooking and need to improve your workspace, there are many reasons to replace your sink.

We have compiled a list of 15 types of kitchen sinks in terms of style and material. Each type includes variants for the best usage, pros, and cons. Once you find a sink model that best fits your needs, browse our wide range of kitchen sinks. You will surely find the right one!

SINK WITH ONE BASIN

Sinks with a single basin have one large sink without partitions and are a great choice for small kitchens with limited countertop space. They make cleaning large dishes easier.

Sinks with a single bowl are not ideal for multitasking, such as cleaning and cooking at the same time, so they are recommended for smaller households or individuals.

Advantages:

They work well in small kitchens: These sinks take up less valuable space on the countertop than sinks with double basins.

More spacious: One large sink makes it easier to clean large dishes, such as baking trays and bulky pots.

Disadvantages:

The dish rack takes up space on the counter: If you dry the dishes in the dish rack, it takes up space in the area next to the sink.

Less hygienic: In a sink with one basin, there is no way to separate contaminated dishes (such as those used for raw meat) from other dishes.

2. SINK WITH DOUBLE BOWL

If you are planning to hand wash dishes, double-bowl sinks can offer functionality as well as style. These sinks are equipped with a partition so you can designate one side of the sink for dishwashing and the other for rinsing, drying, or food preparation.

Sinks with a double bowl are available in various sizes, colors, and styles, making it easy to incorporate them into the design of your kitchen.

Pros:

Ideal for hand washing: Separate basins for washing and rinsing make double-bowl sinks the best choice for hand washing dishes.

Ideal for installing a kitchen waste disposer: In general, the waste disposer is installed in a secondary sink, so it remains accessible even when the main sink is filled with water or dishes.

Space for food preparation: When preparing food, you can designate one sink for dirty dishes and the other for vegetable preparation.

Disadvantages:

It takes up more space: Double bowl sinks are larger in size, so they are not ideal for small kitchens.

3. KITCHEN SINK "LOW-DIVIDE"

The kitchen sink with a low partition or sink with a low score has a low central divider that only rises to about half of the sink. This way you will have space for washing larger dishes that wouldn't fit in two separate sinks or one single bowl sink, while still being able to organize washing and rinsing into separate compartments.

Pros:

Space for large dishes: The lower rack provides more space for washing large pots and pans.

Separate sinks: With a kitchen sink with a low partition, you will be able to designate one sink for cleaning and the other for rinsing or drying.

Disadvantages:

Shallow sinks: You won't be able to fill either side of your sink beyond the low partition, which proves to be problematic if you need to fill the sink with water.

4. OVERMOUNT KITCHEN SINK

An overmount kitchen sink, also known as a top-mount sink or drop-in sink, is placed on the countertop and creates an edge. It is a versatile option because it is easy to install and provides extra support, meaning you can use almost any material, regardless of its weight.

One of the factors that needs to be taken into account is that dirt and impurities can accumulate on the edge of the sink, making it harder to clean.

Advantages:

Easy installation: Properly labeled as drop-in sinks, you should be able to install a top-mount sink yourself.

Affordable: Even with professional installation, the sink will be cheaper.

Good for porous worktops: Kitchen sinks mounted on the top provide a barrier that prevents water damage to surrounding worktops.

Disadvantages:

It interrupts the flow on the worktop: The raised edge around the sink, which is located at the top, can collect crumbs and dirt, resulting in mold. I.e. more difficult cleaning.

It takes up space on the work surface: If you need every centimeter of space on the work surface that you can get, this assembly is not the best choice.

5. BOTTOM INSTALLATION OF THE SINK

The undermount sink is installed directly under the countertop, creating a smooth look from the countertop to the sink basin. This type of sink is universal and suitable for most kitchen layouts. Not only do these sinks look elegant, but they also make cleaning easier, as dirt can be easily swept directly into the sink without getting caught on the edge of the sink.

Pros:

Clean line of the sink with the worktop: Because the edge of the sink is in the same plane as the worktop. Ideal for a modern kitchen.

Easily cleanable: You will be able to wipe the crumbs directly into the sink because the edge is below the counter.

Disadvantages:

Price: The installation of these sinks is often more expensive.

It is not compatible with all countertops: Laminate or tile countertops may not be strong enough to support a sink under mounting.

Difficult installation: Hiring a professional for the installation of this type of sink is necessary to prevent serious leaks and improper support.

6. STAINLESS STEEL SINKS

Stainless steel sinks are lightweight and easy to install, making them a functional and popular choice. They are available in various styles.

Stainless steel sinks are categorized by the thickness of the sheet or gauge. Stainless steel sinks tend to be noisier than sinks made of other materials and can dent, but they offer high heat and stain resistance.

Pros:

Longevity: Stainless steel is a great choice for a high-quality sink in the middle of a path that will last forever.

Durability: Stainless steel sinks never stain or rust and will maintain their shine for years to come.

It's easy to clean: Stainless steel is non-porous and prevents harmful bacteria from building up.

Versatile: These stools will complement any color or style of kitchen.

Disadvantages:

Noisy: When cleaning dishes in a stainless steel sink, expect loud banging and clattering.

Susceptible to scratching: Abrasive cleaning products or metal dishes can cause small scratches in steel over time. This creates the so-called patina of the sink.

It can wrinkle: Applies to thin material pockets.

7. CAST IRON SINK

Cast iron sinks are sprayed with porcelain enamel, which gives them a glossy white surface finish that appeals to many homeowners seeking a sink that would complement their kitchen in a vintage, rustic, or country style.

Porcelain enamel bathtubs are heavier and more durable than other bathtubs, but the porcelain enamel can easily chip. These bathtubs are not intended for cleaning with abrasive cleaning agents, as they wear down the enameled coating. Additionally, you will need to be careful when washing dishes.

Pros:

Easy maintenance: The smooth porcelain surface allows for quick wiping off dirt.

It retains heat: If you mind that the water in the middle of washing dishes cools down, a cast iron sink will keep the water warm longer.

Resistance: Cast iron pans are resistant to cracking and denting and can last a very long time with proper care.

Disadvantages:

Price: Cast iron sinks are one of the most expensive sinks to buy and install.

The enamel can flake off: Abrasive cleaning agents can cause scratching or chipping of the porcelain coating, making the iron susceptible to corrosion.

Porcelain gets discolored: It is very likely that the porcelain coating will get discolored over time.

8. SHAMPOO SINK

Fireclay sinks are made from clay and glaze, which are fused at very high temperatures, up to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Fireclay sinks are nearly identical to cast iron sinks, but they tend to be slightly more durable. They do not chip, stain, or tarnish, and unlike a cast iron sink, you can use abrasive cleaners.

Chamotte refractory bricks are usually more expensive than cast iron ones due to a more extensive manufacturing process.

Pros:

Non-porous: Chamotte is non-porous, resistant to acids, and easily maintained in cleanliness.

Relatively resistant to chipping: Unlike cast iron sinks, there is a smaller likelihood of scratching or chipping with fireclay sinks.

Handmade: Each sink is unique.

Disadvantages:

Dear: Although fireclay sinks are almost indistinguishable from cast iron sinks, they are often more expensive.

Limited design options: Almost all fireclay sinks have a single-basin design in the style of so-called farmhouse sinks.

9. Granite sink

Granite sinks are constructed by bonding crushed granite together with a resin filler. This type of sink is incredibly durable, stain-resistant, and provides top-of-the-line modern design to any kitchen.

Sinks made of granite are heavier than sinks made of stainless steel.

Pros:

Resilient yet forgiving: Granite sinks have high impact resistance.

Hygienic: Unlike natural granite, granite composite is highly non-porous and almost hydrophobic, which means there are not many places for bacteria to grow here.

Easy cleaning: Granite composite does not require chemical cleaners and hard scrubbing to look like new.

Disadvantages:

Price: Granite sinks are more expensive compared to stainless steel sinks.

Risk of chipping: Granite composite sinks can chip or crack when heavy objects are handled carelessly.

10. FARMERS' SINK

The farmhouse sink, also known as an apron sink, extends beyond the edge of your countertop. This type of sink is most commonly used in a traditional or rustic farmhouse-style kitchen and can be designed with either a single or double bowl.

These farmhouse sinks are gaining popularity with the revival of rustic and country interiors. They are usually made of ceramic. They are incredibly durable and easy to clean due to their non-porous material. Farmhouse sinks have a deep basin that is ideal for large families, big pots and pans, and easy cleaning.

Pros:

Elegant design: Farmhouse sinks draw inspiration from vintage design, making them a timeless trend.

Resistant: These sinks are made from durable materials such as granite or ceramic.

Functional: A large single-bowl sink can serve many purposes in the household, from washing laundry to bathing infants.

Extra capacity: The large width and depth of these sinks are ideal for soaking hard-to-clean items, such as grill grates and mats.

Disadvantages:

Price: These sinks are often made of more expensive materials.

Heavier construction and larger dimensions of the sink: Depending on the material, it may be necessary to make some adjustments to your existing cabinet to support the additional weight.

11. BAR SINK

Bar sinks are installed in a home wet bar and are generally smaller and shallower than your average kitchen sink, making them a secondary option.

It is usually a single-bowl design used for food preparation, beverage preparation, and easy cleaning. If you have a large family or group of friends, a bar sink is great for entertaining in your home bar, patio, or terrace.

Pros:

Compact: Bar sinks are much smaller than traditional full-size sinks and can be strategically placed in a spot that may be difficult to use in other ways.

Efficient: These secondary sinks are suitable for food preparation and cleaning, especially when there is more than one cook in the kitchen.

Versatile: Bar sinks are available in various sizes and materials that can be customized to your needs.

Disadvantages:

Small: Just like a secondary sink, a small, shallow basin can limit its use.

Additional expenses: Another sink means additional costs that will need to be included in your budget.

12. Corner sink

Corner sinks are two sink bowls installed at the corner of your countertop. Both sinks are separated from each other. It is a relatively unique design that can be useful if you want to maximize the space of your countertop.

Corner sinks can be expensive and are difficult to install. Given that most countertops are edged in the corner, custom cuts in the countertop will increase the overall installation costs of this type of sink.

Pros:

Efficient use of space: Corner cabinets take up the countertop area that is usually difficult to utilize for other purposes.

Unique design: These sinks are much less common than traditional sink styles and will be an interesting focal point in your kitchen.

Disadvantages:

Difficult installation: Corner sinks require a customized installation process, including cutting holes in the countertop.

13. KITCHEN ISLAND SINK

Kitchen islands are becoming increasingly popular, along with kitchen sinks on kitchen islands. These sinks can be used as a primary or a prep sink, depending on your needs.

Sinks with a kitchen island are a great way to complement your workflow and save space on your main countertop. They can also transform your kitchen island into a complete workspace. They look beautiful on a wooden, granite, or stainless steel island, so in terms of design, you have endless options. If you are considering adding a sink to your kitchen island, don't forget to consider the additional costs of installing plumbing on your kitchen island.

Pros:

Functional: By placing the sink on the kitchen island, you can optimize the workspace.

A better washing experience: Having a sink on the kitchen island means you can still participate in conversations while cleaning – you won't have your back turned to your guests.

Disadvantages:

Additional costs and installation steps: Installing a sink on your kitchen island means that you will also have to install water supply and drainage pipes on your island.

It can be a mess: The fact that dirty dishes pile up in the sink can detract from the attractiveness of the kitchen island.

It won't work with every island: To achieve the functionality that this type of sink can offer, the island will need enough space for the sink, room for stacking dishes, and ideally a dishwasher.

KITCHEN SINK WITH A DRAINING BOARD

Kitchen sinks with draining boards are practical and ecological. Sinks with draining boards have a connected draining surface, which allows water to drain directly into the sink.

If you enjoy cooking, draining boards are a great choice because they create a dedicated section for food preparation on your counter. The draining board also provides space for drying dishes and other kitchenware by allowing excess water to drain into the sink.

Pros:

It keeps the desk dry: There is no need to have a drying rack.

Disadvantages:

They take up space on the countertop: Sinks with draining boards require more space on the countertop than traditional sinks.

15. INTEGRATED KITCHEN SINK

If you are looking for a uniquely tailored option that can serve as a striking piece in your kitchen, the integrated kitchen sink is incomparable. These sinks are integrated into the countertop and made of the same material - in most cases from one piece - and provide an elegant and seamless look.

However, this style of sink can be very expensive compared to other types of kitchen sinks. Because integrated sinks are essentially washbasins built directly into your worktop, they can incur significant additional costs with materials such as marble.

Pros:

Coherent design: Thanks to the elimination of the overlapping board characteristic of the plug-in sockets, the integrated sockets provide an aerodynamic, minimalist look.

Easy cleaning: The absence of sealing edges and seals allows for an almost maintenance-free design that only requires occasional wiping.

Highly customizable: This type of sink will be completely unique for your home - you will determine the material, size, and shape yourself.

Disadvantages:

Dear: The luxurious appearance of an integrated kitchen sink requires professional designers, installation, and a high price.

Irreplaceable: Replacing or modifying your integrated sink entails replacing the entire countertop.
